The brief

Present a mechanical watch so the visitor feels the precision rather than being told about it. The standard solution in this category is scroll tied to a sequence of a hundred or so pre-rendered frames. That demos well, but in reality it means a multi-megabyte download, dropped frames on fast scrolling, and a movement that stops the moment the visitor stops scrolling.

Decisions

Scroll moves the camera, not the movement

The single most important decision in the project. The movement runs regardless of what the visitor does — scroll only changes the angle it is seen from. Visitors can scroll as fast as they like and the balance wheel still oscillates at the same rhythm, because it does not know scroll exists.

The time comes from the device clock

The hands do not follow an animation, they follow the actual time. If the watch on the page reads 14:32, that is what your device reads too. That stops the whole scene being a recording and makes it an instrument, which is the one thing that gives a watchmaking brand credibility.

One smoothing layer, not three

Smooth scroll, animation scrubbing and the camera's own easing together produce a feeling of lag even though each part is correct on its own. Only one layer was kept, so the response stays immediate.
